What is Spiritual Direction?

Sometimes called a co-listener, prayer companion, soul friend, or a spiritual guide, a spiritual director offers the meaningful practice of walking alongside another as they notice together how God is already present in the individuals’ life.

The focus of our time together in spiritual direction is on you and your relationship with the Divine - however that may look. It invites you into a safe space to slow down, reflect, and notice what’s stirring within you. Some utilise the time as a way to deepen their faith, exploring different prayer practices and ways of being with God. Some find it a helpful place to unpack and process some of the deep experiences of life, while others enjoy the safe, non-judgemental space to consider questions they have been curious about, letting them sit and linger. Some people want to use the space to unpack something that has been meaningful or caught their attention. Some long for connection with God but can’t seem to find it, or feel frustrated that God seems to talk to everyone else but not to them. Most find it a combination of all of the above depending on the month.

Whatever brings you here, it is welcome.

Despite its name, spiritual direction isn’t about being “directed” aka told what to do! Instead, think of it as being on a journey together. My role is to listen with you, to notice, reflect back, and hold space as you discover more of how God is already at work in your life. The focus of our time together is on you and your relationship (or sometimes lack thereof) with God.

I enjoy creating a safe space for you to come and be, to bring the highs, lows, questions, frustrations and joys that are on your mind. By asking questions to help you reflect and connect with what you have noticed, honouring silence, pauses and spacious reflection while holding a non-anxious and non-judgemental position, there is room for you to show up as the real you, however that may look.

The first time we meet will be a free 30 minute intro session to dip your toes in and see if spiritual direction is something you would find helpful. If you decide to continue, we would generally meet every 4-6 weeks for one hour each session.

I am committed to making spiritual direction accessible to all and therefore operate the one hour sessions on a sliding scale ($40-$70), as you can afford.
If finances are a barrier, please let me know.

At present, I am offering spiritual direction online only (Zoom) as together with my husband, cat and dog I am on a pilgrimage of my own around the beautiful South Island of Aotearoa.
